Tunnidge Bio

In a period where Dubstep affiliated artists are making headlines and achieving mainstream success, on the flipside there remains a simmering melting pot of creativity, driven by a dedicated community of heads ensuring the underground has never been stronger. Veteran producer Tunnidge is a key proponent of this movement, and is devoted to pushing positivity and innovation whether it’s manning the decks at locations around the world, conjuring magic on the buttons, running a vinyl label or etching designs behind an easel.

Tunnidge hails from near South London’s well documented creative hub of Croydon, and draws from a unique arsenal of beats composed in varying styles around the 140bpm mark, all with an emphasis on devastating sub-frequencies. Friends with DMZ’s Mala since school days, Tunnidge’s initial involvement in the fledgling Dubstep scene came through sharing his love for art, and designing the artist’s portraits on Mala’s seminal Deep Medi imprint. These Medi heads have since become synonymous with the label and together with his burgeoning production skills, Tunnidge unleashed his inaugural Medi release, the earth shattering Geddeon / Face Melt to widespread acclaim.

Rapidly building a dedicated fan base with his uncompromising sound, Tunnidge continued to release on influential labels including Boka Records, and was the first artist invited to release a solo effort on Dj Distance’s highly respected Chestplate Records with the essential Seven Breaths / Fear 12”. Not one to rest on his laurels, Tim has further demonstrated his industrious nature and A&R skills in heading up the promising Origin Audio, and in addition to creating a platform for his own productions, the label provides a vinyl outlet for some of Dubstep’s rising talents.

Tunnidge is an integral part of the Get Darker outfit who collectively are instrumental in disseminating quality progressive music across the globe, and as well as applying dubplate pressure on the famous Get Darker ones and twos on a regular basis, he featured on the label’s second release with Control, one of the most punishing beats of 2011 and the sublimely contrasting flip Decay. With his Deep Medi catalogue already extended with the colossal Dark Skies/ Tribe plate, and huge plans in the pipeline for both his Deep Medi & Chestplate families, expect another landmark year in 2012 from Tunnidge as he continues imprint his qualities, music and vibes across the Dubstep community.

FUZZ!! is celebrating Thanksgiving in style this year, by bringing back a special guest that absolutly destroyed Pittsburgh the last time he was here. Join us and Hustling Tom Turkey in welcoming:

DJG
(San Fransisco; Transistor, Pushing Red, Wheel&Deal, Lo Dubs, Warm Communications, Narco.Hz, Subway, Tube10, Noppa)

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dean J. Grenier A.K.A DJG landed in the world of Dubstep in 2007 with his first 12” “Shadow Skanking” b/w “Joyful Sound” on Narco.Hz. Immediate support on Rinse FM and in the clubs from DJ’s like N-Type propelled DJG to the forefront of American dubstep producers early in his career.

DJG’s production style is richly melodic, emotive while full of groove and energy. Recognized early on for a more dubwise sound, DJG’s recent productions have revealed an evolution in his music, getting deeper into bass-heavy, tech-drenched, soulful tracks like the much-anticipated February ‘09 release “Bunker” b/w “Apophenia” on Tube10 and “Avoid The Noid” b/w “Duality” on Pushing Red. DJs ranging from Mary Anne Hobbs, N-Type, Joe Nice, Pinch, Headhunter, LD, Quest, Skream, RSD, 2562, Djunya, Random Trio and many more have been supporting DJG’s recent and forthcoming releases on labels Wheel&Deal, Transistor, Pushing Red, Warm Communications amongst others.

With over 13 years djing experience, when DJG gets behind the decks, his passion for the music he plays is obvious. His enthusiasm for the deeper side of dubstep and his affection for dance floor selections makes each set a spontaneous combination of the highs and lows that the sound has to offer.

In what is sure to the be the event of the summer, FUZZ!! is extremely proud to welcome to Pittsburgh for the FIRST time ever an absolute don of the drum and bass scene, and currently one of the hottest and most prolific producers around. Join us as we welcome to Pittsburgh:

S.P.Y (UK; Soul:r, Metalheadz, Innerground)

S.P.Y has firmly established himself as one of the most exciting producers and DJs in drum & bass, earning support across the scene with consistent releases on top labels such as RAM, Innerground, Soul:r, Metalheadz, Shogun. In demand as a DJ, producer, collaborator (with the likes of Marcus Intalex, Marky and Total Science) and remixer (Goldie, Deadmau5, Claude van Stroke and Zinc feat Miss Dynamite) he’s keeping up the pace in 2011 with further releases set for Soul:r, Subtitles, Razors Edge and Reinforced early in the year plus bigger projects in the pipeline.

Since moving to London from Sao Paolo 7 years ago, Carlos Lima aka S.P.Y hasn’t looked back. Initially drawn to the city for it’s music and culture, S.P.Y soon settled in amongst the vibrant drum & bass scene. With a background in DJing stretching back to the age of 12, his skills behind the turntables were already in place and he set out to make his mark as a producer. A natural talent for music production certainly helped and, after just six months of learning on basic equipment, he signed his first ever release to Metalheadz in 2005. His impressive
debut ‘Til Dawn’ was included on the Winter of Content compilation album and a sure sign that S.P.Y would be one
to watch.

In 2006, he quickly followed up with ‘Black Flag b/w Double Dragon’ for new label Med School and helped set the standard for Hospital’s alternative, more experimental imprint. Developing his own brand of original yet dancefloorfriendly beats, S.P.Y stepped up his game with a further single (‘Ghost Ship b/w Silent Sleeper’) before
moving on to release on diverse labels including Critical and Samurai.
A series of collaborations followed with the likes of Mosus, Physics, BCee and Kiat: no surprise, given S.P.Ys reputation in the studio and professional yet easy-going outlook. Together with fellow Brazilian C.A.B.L.E., he forms Damage Inc and the duo have released on Total Science’s Advanced imprint. In 2008, two of his joint productions (‘Close Encounters’ with Kiat and ‘Cold 909s’ with Mosus) were among the standout tracks in the excellent DAT Music 2 compilation and marked his debut for Soul:r.

2009 brought his first solo EP for Soul:r, demonstrating his diversity drawing together deeper vibes and dancefloor sensibilities. He also established lasting production partnerships with Total Science and DJ Marky and dropped further releases on Digital Soundboy, Innerground and Metalheadz.

In 2010 S.P.Y stepped it again and proved to be capable of both quality and consistency, delivering standout releases for Ram, Metalheadz, Shogun and Spearhead. His tracks won DJ support across the scene, with Friction featuring 5 S.P.Y productions on his Ministry of Sound mix CD and Andy C selecting 4 for his Nightlife CD. Marky & S.P.Y also took on highprofile remixes for the likes of Deadmau5, Claude von Stroke and Zinc Ft. Miss Dynamite, with S.P.Y’s own personal unofficial relicks of Zero 7 and LTJ Bukem becoming a signature in his live sets.

He’s keeping up the pace in 2011, with further releases set for Soul:r, Subtitles, Razors Edge and Reinforced early in the year before turning his attentions to album projects later in the year. Look out for collaborative appearances on Marcus Intalex’s album and more alongside Total Science and Marky as well as solo material forthcoming from this dynamic and hard-working DJ/producer.

On August 17th, FUZZ!! is proud to welcome back to Pittsburgh an absolute legend of drum and bass. The man needs no introduction, but if you don’t know, join us in welcoming:

DJ SS (UK; Formation Records)

Originally a breakdancer, DJ SS began his DJ career playing electro as a teenager in the early 1980s. He then moved onto playing hip hop and rare groove before turning to production in 1988 with his first attempts being initially acid house, hardcore, breakbeat and finally drum and bass.

SS got his big break at the British raves of the early 1990s such as Telepathy and he played an important role in the early-’90s development of drum and bass, releasing a number of formative tracks beginning in 1990 on his co-owned Formation label before returning in the mid-’90s with a plethora of productions after a brief sabbatical. In the early ’90s when hardcore began to morph into what would become known as drum and bass, he released a series of influential tracks on Formation, including “Breakbeat Pressure,” one of the style’s early classics. However, once drum and ‘bass traded its hardcore roots for a more ragga-inflected sound around 1993, SS retired from production, not being interested in the ragga sound.

He focused his efforts during this period on other labels that he ran. He returned to drum and bass a few years later, though, in a big way. Throughout the late ’90s he released several records on different labels under a number of monikers (Keen, Tekniq), becoming one of the more recognized producers in the U.K. drum and ‘bass scene.

SS is the co-founder and head of the Formation Records label, and has released over 100 tracks using a number of aliases. These include the “Color Series” and the “Country Series”, MA3 “Those DJs”, the piano-theme-from-Love Story-sampling “Lighter” (the label’s biggest hit) plus many popular drum and bass tunes. He has also remixed “No Good (Start the Dance)” by The Prodigy. He has featured on radio shows such as BBC 1Xtra’s D&B M1X, on which he put together an hour-long mix of Formation tracks and was interviewed about his career.

On May 11, 2011 FUZZ!! is proud to celebrate our 11 year anniversary at the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern. This is a monumental achievement for a weekly event, especially an all drum and bass night. We decided to invite one of our favorite performers to help us celebrate the night, and we hope you join us in welcoming back:

KLUTE (UK; Commercial Suicide, Soul:R, Signature)

Tom Withers, AKA Klute, has been a fixture on the Drum and Bass scene for over eight years, lending his creativity to the likes of Metalheadz, 31 Records and his early stable Certificate 18, responsible for releasing his first two albums, “Casual Bodies” and “Fear of People”. In 2001 his own Commercial Suicide imprint was borne out of a necessity on Klute’s part to control his own releases as well as provide a support network for the ever increasing new generation of like minded producers. So far the label has seen releases by Klute himself, Calibre, Total Science, Digital, and Austrian prodigy D.Kay. Previous to this much lauded and rebellious electronic career, Klute fronted legendary Skate-Punk outfit, ‘The Stupids’, an apt schooling for a producer with this unique level of eclecticism.

As an ongoing studio experiment, tracks from both albums have crept onto sound systems and into the hands of DJs all over the world in recent months and henceforth proved their dance floor worth and immediacy. This fresh take on dance floor elements has been welcomed across the board by the likes of Goldie, Bailey, Marcus Intalex, Fabio, Trace, Andy C and Ed Rush. Any preconceived ideas of a lack of non D&B maturity in Klute’s other works have been dispelled thanks to DJ support from Andrew Weatherall, the Plump DJ’s, Laurent Garnier and Mr C amongst others.

“To me drum & bass is a form of music which has always been out on a limb and the tracks that have shocked me are those that have expanded on what went before them”, explains Tom. “Whether that’s people using the technology in ways that you’re not supposed to or just turning around sounds in different ways. As far as I am concerned people taking chances is the future and I would like to think that my material falls into that category.”

With opening support from the 412DNB and FUZZ!! resident DJs.

On April 6, 2011 412DNB is proud to present the first time performance of an absolute drum and bass legend at FUZZ!!

Join us in welcoming:

TOTAL SCIENCE (UK, CIA/Deep Kut/Advanced/Skin Deep/CIA Ltd/MetalHeadz)

The duo that would become Total Scince first met in 1987, both living on Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England and brought together through a mutual love of hip-hop. Distracted by the arrival of hardcore in the early nineties, record collecting was quickly followed by DJing and eventually production.

Greenhalgh was the first into the studio, with “Freestyle Fanatic EP” as Q Project launching his career in 1991. However it was the establishment of the Legend imprint and specifically Greenhalgh’s track “Champion Sound” from the “Return Of Q. Project”, which really took their profile above and beyond the slew of anonymous white labels that were dominating the music at the time.

In 1994, the pair started recording together, with “Got To Believe” the first in a series of records which pushed the label away from the fizzling darkside movement and more towards the epic string sections and rolling beats which started to appear on labels like Lucky Spin Recordings, Basement Records and Good Looking Records.

After six years of recording singles for others, the pair established the C.I.A. label in the closing months of 1997 with the help of Brillo from Timeless Recordings. The release of “Silent Reign” for Goldie’s label Metalheadz, breathed a new lease of life into the project, and the pair achieved a further boost with a well-timed Bad Company remix of “Champion Sound” which conjured further interest in what they were doing at their own label.

Their debut album “Advance” exposed a further field of interest, with downtempo experiments logged as a series of ‘breaks’ on the majority of their early EP’s extended to some superb deep house, this breadth taken a step further with their Skindeep imprint which has forged broken beat to considerable acclaim.

2000 saw the founding of CIA’s sister label Advanced, created as a means to keep up with the high level of production output from the duo and their confederates, for which one label was no longer enough. Following from this came the renowned Sektor series on Advanced. Initially created as a way of combining up-and coming artists with those more established, the series was also developed as a means to stress the importance more on the music than the artists. Featuring artists such as Baron, Digital, D.kay, Lee, Juju, Beta 2 and Klute, the Sektor series included seminal tracks such as “Squash”, and the ever popular “Champion Sound” remix.

Their pioneering of a revival in old-school sounds and arrangements, together with labels Digital UK and Reinforced Records, dominated drum & bass throughout 2010 and beyond.

::: ONRA

Onra is a French beatmaker currently residing in Paris. First introduced to Pittsburgh at the 2010 VIA Festival, Onra is back by popular demand.

Onra released his first album with other french producer and friend Quetzal (Al Quetz) in 2006. A hip-hop tribute to soul music which was played several times by Gilles Peterson, Benji B, and covered on Okayplayer.com.

At the same time, he started collaborating with American keyboard player called Byron The Aquarius and released an album under the name of The Big Payback in 2007 on Japanese label Circulations. A project full of different influences such as futuristic hip-hop, spaced out and jazzy broken beats. They also appeared on highly praised compilations such as Beat Dimensions and New Worlds.

::: GOLDEN AGES
Scheduled to play SXSW 2011.

http://soundcloud.com/golden-ages

A bold step back to the time when big acoustics mattered but still keep it very 2011 – falling somewhere blissfully between the experimental side of Animal Collective and the accessible side of Fuck Buttons. Golden Ages isn’t really a chillwave artist at all, but instead represents that missing link between the artists that influenced the birth of chillwave (especially Panda Bear/Animal Collective) and the honest-to-god chillwave artists like Neon Indian, MillionYoung, and Memory Tapes.
